Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that increases serotonin availability in the brain. Veterinarians prescribe it for dogs and cats to help manage behavioral conditions such as separation anxiety, compulsive behaviors, aggression, and inappropriate urination or marking. Some owners report gradual improvement over several weeks, since fluoxetine typically takes time to reach full effect. Compounding allows precise doses for small dogs and cats, in forms such as flavored oral liquids, capsules, or chewable treats. Fluoxetine is usually given once daily, and it should not be stopped abruptly without veterinary guidance.
