Gabapentin works by calming overactive nerve signaling. Veterinarians use it for dogs and cats to help manage chronic and nerve-related pain, including pain from arthritis or after surgery. It is also used as an add-on therapy for seizures and to reduce anxiety before vet visits, travel, or other stressful events. Commercial gabapentin products often come in strengths that are hard to divide for smaller animals, and some commercial liquids contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Blackburn Drug can compound pet-safe, xylitol-free formulations such as flavored oral suspensions, capsules, and treats. Mild sedation may occur, particularly when starting treatment.
