Ketotifen is a mast cell stabilizer and H1 antihistamine that works two ways. It blocks histamine at its receptors and helps keep mast cells from releasing histamine and other inflammatory mediators in the first place. Compounded oral ketotifen is most often prescribed for mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), chronic urticaria (hives), and other persistent allergic and histamine-related conditions. Some individuals report gradual improvement in symptoms such as flushing, itching, digestive discomfort, and food or environmental sensitivities, with full effect often taking several weeks. Ketotifen is typically taken once or twice daily as directed by your prescriber. Drowsiness is common, especially when starting treatment, so many patients take their dose in the evening.
