Methimazole is an antithyroid medication that reduces thyroid hormone production by blocking an enzyme the thyroid gland needs to make hormone. It is a first-line option for managing hyperthyroidism in cats. Because many cats resist taking pills, methimazole is often compounded as a transdermal gel applied to the inner ear flap. It can also be prepared as flavored oral suspensions, chewable treats, or capsules. Treatment is typically ongoing, with periodic bloodwork so your veterinarian can monitor thyroid levels. Wear gloves when applying transdermal methimazole.
