Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent that is effective against anaerobic bacteria and parasites such as Giardia. Veterinarians commonly prescribe it for dogs and cats with diarrhea, inflammatory bowel conditions, and certain dental, wound, or other anaerobic infections. Metronidazole is notoriously bitter, which often leads to drooling and refusal, so compounding it in flavored forms can make a real difference. Options include micronized flavored suspensions, capsules, and treats. It is typically given with food, and the full course should be finished as prescribed. For use in non-food-producing animals only.
