Cisapride (Veterinary)
Cisapride is a gastrointestinal prokinetic agent that encourages movement through the digestive tract by stimulating serotonin receptors in the gut wall. Veterinarians most often prescribe it for cats with chronic constipation or megacolon, and it may also be used in dogs and cats for other motility disorders, such as delayed stomach emptying or reflux. Cisapride is no longer available as a commercial product, so compounding is the primary way to obtain it. Blackburn Drug can prepare it as flavored oral suspensions, capsules, or treats. It is usually given before meals, as directed by your veterinarian. For use in non-food-producing animals only.
